Starting to write material for a new album
Mar 3, 2010 Uncategorized
The last month or so has been a little slow.. as far as pretty much everything goes. School’s gotten a bit uninteresting (not that business foundations was very interesting to begin with), and the musical material has taken a dip after a small resurgence of drawing/designing. My focus lately has been to create varied pieces of art for a portfolio I’ll use in my application to a Graphic Design program. However, over the week I spent at home (reading week), I’ve gained a strange new motivation, in regards to school, creation of music and art, and general pro-activity. My recording equipment is limited, to the point where I have none, save for the internal microphone on my laptop. Because of this, a lot of you might not be able to hear any of the new material I’ve been coming up with, but this post is to point out some of the differences there will be in the new album compared to the recently finished EP. There’s no indication the album will be ready or recorded anytime soon, but it will be significantly longer than the EP, and thus I think it deserves a bit of preparation.
One of the main things i want to do is re-write or at least greatly alter the existing songs. A lot, if not all of the material on Mellow Musings has a simple, rhythm based groove, something that worked quite well as a whole, but lacked something more complex and intriguing. The songs themselves could and will have more parts, perhaps new instruments, and with that, collaborations with other artists.
As far as the new material I’ve worked on so far, I’ve written two songs, one being an instrumental, and the other being a song I wrote while living in Guelph a year ago. The instrumental is in the same key as Isla’s Jig, but has a very different approach, using the open tuning to create a driving blues melody. The other song, as of now untitled, features piano, multiple vocal harmonies, and, if possible live drums.
Here’s some lyrics from new pieces I’ve been working on. Feel free to offer any feedback you may have..
Blue-Green Ball
You, dip the tips of your wings
Into a bowl of pure serenity
A “come-together” memory
Of the truth, you so eagerly display
Through your eyes we clearly see it
But do we want to believe it?
You had cunning, I was humble
You were quick to be misleading
At each and every meeting
Alas I’m but a simple man
I held on to every word
Every scribble in the sand
We’re all on the same blue-green ball
We all have a heart and we’re all prone to fall
Without one another we can’t stay too late
‘Lest the mindless take over and seal our fate
I always thought that you were different
Thoughtful, not belligerent
A living form of diligence
But as the story goes, thoughts are often broken dreams
Pieces of reality,
Strewn amongst threads of fantasy
We’re all on the same blue-green ball
We all have a heart and we might soon fall
Without one another we won’t stay too late
‘Lest our minds take over, and seal our fate
Somebody for Everybody
Rainbow teardrops fallin’ down
Hardly a place to be
To see a beautiful creature walkin’
down, down down to me.
Sang a song in the name of
Peace, love and truth
But she didn’t know where the idea came from
Relax, it came from you
Chorus:
So sing that song for me
Oh sing that song for free
Oh sing that song and be somebody that everyone wants you to be
And Sing that song for me (somebody)
And sing that song to free (somebody)
Oh sing that song to be somebody that everyone wants you to be
Whole worlds sitting on your shoulder
Waiting for you to see
The hate, the lies, the awful memories
So deadly they’ll make you bleed
Stand up for your right to fight
The cold hard ways of man,
And if you’re tired of stereotypes
Sit up and raise your hand
Chorus
“Mellow Musings” EP Release / Songcast / Near-future endeavours
Jan 3, 2010 Uncategorized
The EP, Mellow Musings, was released yesterday and sold at a day long show, which took place at a coffee house and restaurant in Port Perry. The album is now available for anyone to purchase. Currently, I will only take cash or check, but new options will be available within the next two months:
Cue Songcast!
I’m basically going to be using this service to sell my EP on many different popular online music distributors, such as Itunes, Napster and Emusic. The process is beginning within a week, but it will take 6-8 weeks for the songs to show up in the search; so for those who live far away and don’t want to go the snail-mail route, the EP will be a click away.
While I was working on the music, I was still writing songs that weren’t to be included in the tracklist. This is because I plan to begin work on a new album this coming summer. I am looking for a few serious musicians (it does NOT matter what you play) to collaborate with me and try to create something really out of the ordinary. If you think you might be interested let me know and we’ll work out when and what we would want to do.
In the meantime, I hope you find the time to purchase the album, or simply listen to a song or two on Myspace. I have reduced the number of songs there to 3, from 6. The album is released now and I think the three songs that have been left serve as a solid image of the album itself.
Peace and love,
HugoRB
